Recycled Water to be Delivered to NFL Stadium
Last week, officials announced that the new 298-acre sports and entertainment development in Inglewood, California, home to the National Football League’s Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams, will be receiving about 26 million gallons of recycled water annually. The reclaimed water will be supplied by the West Basin Municipal Water District where it will be used for landscape irrigation, maintenance, and aesthetic purposes, which includes a Lake Park cascading water feature and various greenspaces. “SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park is a great example of a public-private partnership,”[1] West Basin Board President Gloria D. Gray said. “Together we are able […]
New Proposed Actions for EPA’s National Water Reuse Plan
During the recent Future of Water Infrastructure and Innovation Virtual Summit, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Assistant Administrator for Water, David Ross, announced four new proposed actions under the National Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP). The Summit was hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and their Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. It featured members of the newly formed Water Subcabinet and highlighted, among other issues, the importance of federal coordination on water reuse. “Water reuse is a prime example where enhanced federal coordination under the Water Subcabinet is essential to driving progress on actions that […]
Tucson: A Model for Water Reclamation
In June of last year, Tucson demonstrated its prowess in conservation as it was able to return water to a section of the Santa Cruz River that had been arid for over 70 years. In a city that faces a myriad of water challenges, including climate and increasing population size, it has successfully navigated those challenges. Victory can be attributed to the public and private water organizations of the area who have made water conservation a top priority. Perhaps the strongest indicator of that success is that with a greater than 20 percent population increase, “Tucsonans are now using the […]
First Phase of “Pure Water San Diego” Approved
Early this month, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to approve plans to recycle 30 million gallons of wastewater a day into purified drinking water by 2021. With an overall price tag of $3 billion, San Diego residents will see yearly increases in water rates in order to afford development of what can potentially reverse the region’s water supply challenges. Proponents of the program, known as “Pure Water San Diego,” explain that it will add another layer of water resiliency for residents and businesses. The program will also provide a local supply of potable water that remains unaffected by […]
California is about to Get Down with DPR
In California, the notion of Direct Potable Reuse (DPR) has been in discussion for years. As continued drought and scarce supplies force policy makers to develop options, the strategy of DPR may in fact soon become a reality. While all water is eventually reused, it is first released as treated wastewater into groundwater or surface water; which acts as an environmental buffer prior to being pumped out, treated, and used for potable water supplies. Many regulators in California and other states are beginning to question the value of this environmental buffer. If it were to be removed, reclaimed water could […]
