Late last month the Sustainable Water team traveled to Portland to participate in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s (AASHE) Annual Conference. Our CEO, Jonathan Lanciani, presented alongside Jason Gregory and Howard Wertheimer from Georgia Tech. Their presentation, “Georgia Tech: Leading the Way to Sustainability through Comprehensive Water Management”, highlighted the institute’s innovative new stormwater management plan, which features a blackwater reclamation system. Overall, AASHE was a great opportunity to meet new friends and revisit old ones committed to changing the face of sustainability on college campuses. We look forward to being in touch with many of you soon.
Immediately after AASHE, the Sustainable Water team was back in Atlanta for The University Financing Foundation’s (TUFF) Annual Educational Facilities Best Practices Summit. Mr. Lanciani had an opportunity to participate in an open round table discussion with Holley Henderson from H2 Ecodesign and Jeff Ross-Bain of Ross-Bain Green Building. The round table discussion had a good turn-out; but, the most notable event was the keynote presentation by Hank Huckaby, Chancellor of the Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia.
In an eloquent speech, Huckaby emphasized the need to build bridges between the public and private sector to spur investment in Georgia campuses. Huckaby praised market innovators and welcomed zero-cost financing programs for campus infrastructure improvements – allowing reallocation of University capital to research and academics. This philosophy was a fundamental driver in the development of the Water Purchase Agreement, which provides 100% project finance for campus-wide water reclamation systems through a shared savings agreement. It is our true belief that public-private partnerships are a way of the future and will play a key role in campus as well as municipal development.
Our first event of 2015 will be the Industrial & Water Reuse Conference in San Antonio February 1-3. Jonathan Lanciani will be presenting with Rob Bethea, Environmental Sustainability Manager at Altria on the topic of Onsite Ecological Reuse: High-Impact Solutions for Continuous Growth.
